PORT RICHMOND-August 22, 2004 — Police say the firefighters who perished in the basement of 3630 Belgrade Avenue in Port Richmond died in a tangled web of wires, high intensity lamps and fans that were rigged in a basement closet to grow marijuana.

*- Despite the tragedy of this event it is important to remember that like the dangerous moonshine stills of the days of alocohol prohibition, the type of dangerous grow room described above, is largely due to the illegality of marijuana.

TORONTO — A marijuana protest turned nasty Saturday when at least two people were detained during scuffles with city police on a park lawn near the provincial legislature. The dustup started after police -- accompanied by municipal bylaw officers and parks officials -- shut down the Canabian Day festival, a pro-pot rally when Toronto organizers failed to produce the necessary permits and insurance.

20 Aug, 2004

Chris Bennett talks to Marc Emery from the Saskatoon Prison where he is serving 3 months for passing a joint. In an outrageous verdict that condemns Marc for "political" activism, Judge D. Albert Lavoie abused his authority and made an "example" of Marc's case. This case symbolizes the travesty of current Canadian Marijuana Policy. Marc asks everybody to email and write the Justice Minister Irwin Cotler now and demand liberty for Canada's cannabis culture.
The Criminal Code gives the Minister of Justice the power to review a conviction to determine whether there may have been a miscarriage of justice. This power has been part of Canada's justice system since the original Criminal Code of 1892. Today, the Minister's power to review convictions is set out in sections 696.1-696.6 in Part XXI.1 of the Criminal Code.

It’s not often that police are ordered to hand the contents of a marijuana grow operation back to the very people they confiscated it from. But that’s the decision a court of law made Wednesday regarding two police raids on a local compassion club.

Pot-TV 'The New Statesman': 'H*A*S*H'

19 Aug, 2004

Rik Mayall stars 'The New Statesman', a British comedy that might be described as a combination of 'Yes, Minister' and 'Blackadder'. This is the story of the ruthless Alan B'Stard, a statesman in the tradition of Genghis Khan, who will stop at nothing to make himself richer and more comfortable. In this episode, titled 'H*A*S*H', there is a possibility that Cannabis could be legalised. Piers has been told to do the right thing for England when it comes up for a vote; problem is that he has forgotten what the right thing is! This could be the start of the biggest scam Alan has done in a long time, but the people already in the (illegal) industry may have something to say about the matter.
