Sault Ste Marie is pronounced Soo Ste Marie.
The Algonquins called it Bawating ("place of the rapids"). It's where lake Superior and lake Huron meet, and there is a large section of rapids where the glacial shift left a 20 ft. height difference between the two bodies of water. French settlers named the area "Sault Ste Marie", which translates to "Rapids of Saint Mary".
But with the amount of salt they use on the roads there....you are fully ok to keep calling it salt ste marie they go to BC to buy their cars and their weed
