Police chief says pot study 'unrealistic'

A recommendation by a Fraser Institute study to legalize the marijuana industry is unrealistic, says Port Moody "Marijuana in B.C. is like potatoes in P.E.I. - everybody can grow them," Shrive said.
"So what system could possibly come into place, when people could have their own marijuana patch? As they're harvesting, they're going to say, 'Oh yes, here's the portion that I owe the government.'"
The study, Marijuana Growth in British Columbia, released Wednesday by the Fraser Institute, was written by Stephen Easton, a Simon Fraser University economics professor.
Comparing it to the prohibition of alcohol, Easton argues that the prohibition of marijuana is unsustainable in the long term.
He points to the proliferation of grow operations, the availability of technology to produce marijuana and the level of enforcement.
The multi-billion dollar industry should be legalized and taxed, Easton says, something that could possibly generate more than $2 billion in revenue.
"Alcohol prohibition in the U.S. expanded organized crime in North America," Easton states in his conclusion.
"Removing alcohol prohibition generated many problems, but none like those afflicting society in the days of Al Capone and his ilk. Removing the prohibition on marijuana production would permit society to replace today's gift of revenue to organized crime with (at the very least) an additional source of revenue for government coffers."
But Shrive described the comparisons between prohibition of alcohol and marijuana as inconsistent.
"These people continue to compare prohibition on marijuana to the same as the prohibition days on alcohol, and it just makes me crazy, because alcohol was at the top of its game - that's as high as you went," Shrive said.
"You didn't go from alcohol to now the next worst thing, where with marijuana, we see traditional organized crime already shifting their emphasis from marijuana to methamphetamine labs."
Instead of legalization, Shrive called for tougher consequences for grow operators and improved proceeds of crime laws.
Legalizing marijuana, Shrive said, would also send the wrong message to youth.
"This whole approach that 'We've lost the battle, so let's get in on the good times and squeeze organized crime out, and we'll get the money instead of them,' - I just don't want to belly up to that bar," Shrive said.
"It has no appeal to me whatsoever."

I think pot tv tech Ian should put him saying he consults with the woman who is head of DEA office at the american consulate on a loop and repeat it over three times. When pot-tv and cannabis culture first broke the story in the vancouver courier and other media that the americans had agents on our sovereign soil directing police as to who to bust, even taking inteligence by a notorious coke dealer to bust peacefull ma and pa growers who were keeping people away from him and giving him witness protection and a bunch of dough. Canadains were shocked and outraged .
After 9 11 everything changed.
Now the presence of the DEA is openly discussed like its the time of day . The province has no problem listing them in the subtitles of photgraphs "DEA vancouver Office" They are in cities all over the world now tell local police how to police thier tax paying citizens .That's why I taped this. I guess fanney was just doing her job as a journalist fawning over the captain pumping his ego by suggesting he run for mayor and the personal questions about his private school upbringing and "love of the military" and obsession with children. Napoleon was one who first introduced compulsary education and bells ringing and regementation in order to brainwash the prussian youth make them more managable. Schools set up like fiefdoms with the principle. king-like ruling over all . Not the place to learn about things like liberty or democracy or creativity but rather discipline and blind obedience . Of course the church stepped in with thier residential and private schools , seperating the genders and taking children away from their families . The jesuits known to be highly intelectual had an expression "Give us a child before the age of 7 and he will be with us for life" very much like the good captain is implying . Cop's teaching kids about drugs and herbs? Would you want cops teaching your kids sex education?
I remember when the "reformed drug addict DARE guy came to my highschool in grade 8 . Talked about his lsd trips and crazy party lifestyle. Then he sobers up and gets to go around doing public speaking with rock and roll theme song. Sure made me want to go out try all the drugs drop some sid then Repent it all have an easy life public speaking.
Didnt even rasputin say to the girls "you've got to Sin before you can be Saved"
Oh yeah and i like when she asked him how dangerous grow ops are he mentions electrical where if prohibition was dropped people could hire proper tradesmen like the one or two legal grows highlighted at the beyond prohibition conferance and in the same breath and sentance as he's discussing the dangers of meth and poison on childs toys he makes swith to talking about grow houses as if if properly maintained they are one and the same in bio hazard terms.
As bad as that oinker who was on news saying he thought burns on toddlers arms were from cigarette butts ...(bringing up images of completely insane cruel demented parents, thats what hew thinks of his suspects...
And then says childern are FORCED to work in the garden and have burned thier arms on the bulbs.
The old capatain talks along the same vein.

How come now when i walk up to the esso on kingsway and victoria from knight street at 3am I now see 3 or 4 hardcore crack ho's and the odd pimp around and three police cars parked at the esso giving me the look .
Before the downtown eastside crack down the walk to the store at any hour was safe.
I can even live with having whores in my neighbourhood but if i gave each one a cigarette id have none left when i got home .What makes my skin crawl and most uncomfortable is having to see police hanging out eatting donuts at my favorite store for the stoner munchies.
