VANCOUVER - A provincial court judge refused to grant bail to a woman whose cafe had been openly selling pot over the counter for months.

The decision puzzled and saddened Carol Gwilt's supporters.

"That's crazy -- there are harmful people out there," said David Malmo-Lavine, a friend and fellow marijuana activist. "She's put in there and they're let out to make room for her."

Michael Boudreau, Gwilt's co-accused, said thousands will be dismayed by the court's decision.

The details of Judge Kitchen's ruling can't be released because of a sweeping publication ban standard at bail hearings.

I'm American and I'm not familiar with the Canadian legal system, although I do know that the US and Canadian systems share British heritage. However, I'm quite disturbed by both the denial of bail and the muzzling of the press here. Under what basis can Canadian courts make this order? For a court to be able to make a decision and to simultaneously ban discussion of it seems to invite the abuse of power.

Poor Carole, that sickens me. And with the pace of justce these days that means she can expect many months of incarceration before her trial. I guess we can add her to the list with Marc as another decent, non-violent person imprisoned unjustly for no good reason other than the political statement made by her actions.

Reefer madness strikes again. To rabid prohibitionists like this judge, apparently cannabis advocates are so dangerous that they belong in a special category of offenders along with Paul Bernardo and Robert Pickton, the pig-farm mass murderer. This is truly a day of disgrace for canadian jurists.
