Evidence from Switzerland suggests that prescribing heroin can reduce crime and increase levels of employment among addicts.
While still illegal in the UK, cannabis was downgraded to a category C drug in January 2004.

Would drug legalisation really reduce crime overall, and would it make drug use any safer?

It is hard to think about one IF without thinking about a billion IFs!

What a mess of a quarrel.

What a mess of an anti-prohibitionist rhetoric! I don't understand how people can say that "yeah, cunsumption will go up, yeah, but, but, but..."

I think the evidence is clear, that prohibition is not a major factor in the prevalence of drug consumption. The data of alcohol-prohibition shows that, and data on our current drig-prohibition shows that.

I think anti-prohibitionism needs a very coherent and well-defined platform. I hope that the main-stream media in Europe will adopt patterns of anti-prohibitionism similar in coherence to the North-American legalization rhetoric.
