bbq lava or landscape

is there any reason why not to use gas grill lava rocks aslong as i wash them down 1st,any toxins ? the reason I ask is that landscape is more of a seasonaly stocked item at most hardware stores and may not be available for another month or two.

I guess you could...You may want to fill up an old pillow case and smack it a few times with a shovel or something to break them up to a more workable size. I would definitely wash them in boiling water first, then soak them in bleach water for a little while and rinse them over and over and over again with plain water....
Presto! You could start marketing this stuff! Think of a it, the latest additions to the sterile medium line: HYDROHIPPY LAVA LUMPS! Just think, when orders come flying in you could have a rock banging party! Everyone gets there own pillowcase and a shiny new shovel! I suggest you don't tell them about your stash or you'll be the only one banging rocks!
Seriously though, so long as these are not treated with anything (which I doubt they are) they will work just as good as any you bought from a hydro store. You also won't feel bad throwing out a rootball full of rocks either. You laugh but I fish out every marble of my hydroton from the finished rootmass! Hope this helps, keep us posted...K_K

Got lucky, Stein's had landscape lava in sock. They also had something called "Golden volcanic lava",I went the red route and got twice the ammount for a buck more . I wonder if the golden is better for hydro though,it looked really poreus like a spunge cake but pretty dusty. Thanks for your input...

ive used it with success! itsa bitch to break it down though! now i use expanded clay balls!(growrox)it cost the same!plus it has no sharp edges like broken down bbq lave rocks!

where can you buy growrox? I really need some and cant seem to find them. my best shot is in Austin, but still havent located them. peace
