eggshells will supply the soil with calcium and some magnesium, I have no idea of thier NPK value. Grinding would make the nutrients more readily available. ...peace...moonshiner

and you just assume that they come from the grocery store because....... ????????

yes, in the year 2001, people DO still raise chickens that are fed an organic diet (range fed) which would make the egg shells clean and organic.....

Eggshells definately make a great addition to a good compost!
If you know the source of your eggs as I do, you won't have to sweat the DDT thing too much!! LOL

What is DDT anyway? My guess is that it's some chemical in egg shell? Should I be in rocket science or what?

Re: egg shells new [Post#: 109557 / re: 109483 ]

correct... ddt is banned. it was banned because of its horrible negitive effects on wildlife. the chemical was turning up in fish, which were being eaten by eagles and other birds. i dont believe that it directly effected the animals, but what i know it did do is turned up IN the eggs of the eagles and other birds. it made the egg shells very soft, the babies would die befre hatching. i think ddt is a contributing factor to the eagle being an endangered species (isnt it just a "threatened animal" now, no longer endangered??).

my uncles told me about when he was young, running behind the ddt sprayer truck and playing in the puddles it made! if they only knew then!! im sure it causes cancer in humans... anyhow, its nasty stuff!

egg shells are a good source of lime too.as with any fert the more powdered it is, the faster the lime becomes availible. peace

LOL I was just joking about the DDT didnt think this would get such a large respones, hehe. Sb5 The main reason for the decline in the Bald Eagle population was the use of DDT and the 36 year bounty on them in order to "protect salmon stocks" which was ludecris, salmon stocks were never at risk for the number of prey controls the number of predators not the other way around. The Peregrine also suffered greatly from the use of DDT. FWIW

Slugs don't like eggshells. Its a common practice to scatter shells in the garden to keep the slugs away.

never heard of it being a common practice...

all of the original 3 egg shells have completely disolved into the soil, cant tell a damn bit of difference between her sister and her though, shell and no shell.

arent worried about it anyhow, dont have slugs around here.

egg shells have a sharp edges , well, sharp to slugs anyway. Slugs won't crawl over material like eggshells, gravel, etc. too sharp. if the shells are big enough to stop slugs then the lime/calcium will take a long time to become available to the plant making it no good for immediate effect but excellent for long term(outdoor plots) soil conditioning.only common practice for organic outdoor growers i'd guess, if you have slugs inside you probably have more problems than them. peace

if you live near the ocean and seafood industry, crab shells, oyster shell, fish heads and guts (my buddy worked at a major food store used to give me salmon heads and trimings - i actually could a made a meal from 'em)
damn varmint liked 'em too, plant deep 1 foot and get out your sling shot (or live traps for wussses)

silly boys
DDT was banned for many years in the first world (it would have been political suicide to cause the extinction of our national bird - bald eagle - which nearly happened), they carefully avoided banning it world wide until all existing stocks could be used up (for financial reasons). and although it should have been banned third world countries (where they actually began manufacturing it again) were indeed eating, drinking and smokin it. as were you on things like columbian coffee, bananas, mangoes and the like he he he (how banned is that)
(always wondered why the second world is always overlooked)

so that would be a terrific joke at a party for monsanto execs (for a enviroidiot comedian)
