Chicken Manure

I just put plants in about a 70-30% mix of 70%potting soil, and 30% chicken manure. They seem to be liking it but bottom leaves on some are brown n yellow. some have white on tips. Another weird one but might be strain, not sure but stems are starting to turn a lil red. Has anyone heard of using chicken manure? Is it good or is that why these precious things arent looking as good as they could?

heres 1 with some redness in stem. they all only have about 3-4 sets of lvs. just put fert and flouro. in yesterday

Was that chicken manure composted? 30% still sounds a bit rich, Looks like fertilizer burn to me. I burned some seedlings not long ago with Alaska start-up fertilizer, best thing to do is to leach them puppies and hold off on the nutrients for a while. should clear right up...good luck...moonshiner

Leaching means to flush with plain water, 2 gallons of water per 1 gallon of soil. Put your containers in your bathtub and let them drain as you do it to avoid a huge mess!....moonshiner

I have'nt looked at the photos yet but I'll agree with moonshiner, chicken shit is real high in nitrogen and you used 30% chicken shit in your soil mix.
That's a lot of nitrogen.

I know you're using those flos, but it doesn't look like your plants are close enough to the lights. They should be .5 - 1 inch at all times..it won't burn them to touch the light, so make sure they're really close.

Let your soil go through a wet/dry cycle. after you water always let it (the medium) dry a bit before watering again. pick up your container after you water it thoroughly to see how heavy it feels, you'll see that it has some weight to it.you'll know when it's time to water when the containers fell much lighter. I've always used this method and have never had a problem with over watering....good luck...moonshiner

you can look at it..but the plant will let you know when it needs to be watered..it will start drooping and look sick..that'swhen you water.

I would'nt wait for the plant to start drooping and looking sick before watering! That's called STRESS and could lead to hermaphroditism! If you are that much in doubt as to how to water, by a moisture meter, they're inexpensive and take out the guesswork...moonshiner

a moisture meter is def. a good bet, but it's better to underwater than overwater..I wouldn't guess when to water and water too early..rahter wait until I'm sure it needs it.

checked ph today ph was 7 and nitrogen was B. I leeched them afterwards tho. The measurements arent too far off are they? They should be alright after leeching them. I THINK!

Getting back to the chicken shit. I gotta big bag of it. I will dump it in the compost pile and use it next year. Fresh chicken shit'll burn the hell outtta yer plants. I've not looked at the pics nor read the myriad of answers you recieved. Just thought I'd spill the obvious for you. Chicken shit is dangerous and should not be used before it has set for AT LEAST 1 year.

slc..even though you leached to get rid of the overtfert I'm guessing, you might still want to fert at a very weak strength. Though you jsut got out of overfert, your plants are now without nutes and that's not ever good. weak strength though..

don't feed them , You may still have to leach again if there is no improvement in thier condition.
The chicken manure may still be at high concentrations even after you leach, give the plants time to absorb what is still present in the soil before you start adding more nutrients....moonshiner

those fertilizer sticks are'nt worth a shit, and as far away from organic as you could probably get. get you some fish emulsion and bone meal, both can be found at wally world (wal-mart) and are inexpensive....good luck...moonshiner

moonshiner, after you leach, your plants are left without baely any nutrients..making your plants show sign that they need nutes is stress..stress isn't good. I overferted, then leached and then added some real weak strength fert and they're doing good.

one thing ive noticed is the redness is now turning to purple. All of them are same strain except 1. Not sure which cause they came out of a sac i bought. But the 1 that is different strain a friend started then gave to me. That one isnt getting any red or purple, it's been through same as other plants. ive had it for about a month now. i know they arent that big for about 6 wks old yet, but they have grown a significant amount since i put them under floros. I have had to raise lights a liil evryday. But what im saying is i dont think color in stems is a problem. i think its the strain. ill get a newer pic soon. they are growing fine now but more color. Still waiting to determine M OR F.

chicken manure is pretty hot. a better product, carried at some nurseries is from chicken ranches its manure old (dead) chickens all mulched together (still hot) but a better (rounded fertilizer) with the bone feathers etc. down here they even add coco bean hulls chocolate flavor manure (holds moiture well)

i basically agree with moonshiner#13,
however you might not have this problem if you buy your chicken manure early enough to burn it down (heat wise)
an easy test is if worms can live in it (Hmmmmmmm! worm castings!
