THC concentration in breast milk? [Post#: 101471 ]

Haven't been able to find any specific answers...Does anyone know how much of the THC a pregnant mother consumers is transferred to her baby?
Does the amount lessen is the milk is fed by a bottle that has been refridgerated for several hours?
Dana? Anyone?

i believe that if you smoke herb while your pregnant than the baby will be used to the thc if ya cut it out once ya stop nursing then the baby will experiance withdrawl....

No studies have been done specifically on THC levels in breast milk.

I would expect that the level of THC and other cannabinoids would not be altered by refrigeration.

A study with baby rats showed that when their natural cannabinoid receptors were blocked, the baby rats didn't nurse and they starved to death.

So it seems that our natural cannabinoid receptors are involved in ensuring that babies get the munchies and feed.

So in my opinion, the presence of (non-toxic) cannabinoids in breast-milk is not a concern. The amounts involved will certainly be low enough as to not cause your baby to get high, but they could produce a child who is slightly more hungry and breastfeeds more often, which I would figure is a good thing.

That would certainly counteract the ONE possibly negative issue I've been able to find about using marijuana during pregnancy (and the study really only addressed smoking, not other forms of delivery like tea) which was low birth weight.
Thanks, as always, for the info Dana. :)

Had to throw in my 2¢ here also...I nursed both kids for their first year while smoking and had no troubles with either. Both have grown along a normal growth curve, they didn't get excessive munchies from breast milk. ;) Seriously, it even helped me in the beginning, when I had to relax in order to allow let-down. Those first few weeks HURT!!! Are you a nursing mom green girl?

Thanks for the input Traffic. :) I read your post in response to "pregnant mom smoking pot" as well, and your advice was wonderful. I will take the advice of a responsible mother who's lived it than a doctor who theorizes. Thanks again!

greengirl,

seriously,

the positive effects (as long as you don't smoke enough to seriously de-oxygenate your blood)
seem well ahead of the negative (?)
these are naturally occuring substances after all!

I think that the THC level would be so low that it would not be a concern. When my wife was pregnate she was so sick I asked the doc if she could smoke and he said of corse. it would not harm the baby at all.
