I just received an email from Steve Wyatt, BCTV's
News Director regarding the debates. This is his reply:

Dear Mr. Cowan:
Thank you for your note regarding the proposed leaders debate on BCTV.
I would like to emphasize first that BCTV news is prepared to offer debates
during the campaign at various times of the day.
We are offering to host one, more formal, debate tentatively scheduled for
April 30th. We propose to include the Liberal and NDP party leaders in that
debate for obvious reasons. The Green Party, which has been lobbying to
participate since the 1991 campaign, has been invited this time because of
their now long-standing political presence on the B.C. landscape. They also
have appeared in the most recent scientific opinion survey as number three
in the standing.
With those three included we felt that one end of the political spectrum was
not represented. We invited the Unity Party as representative of that
missing component given that it has adopted many of the viewpoints and
policies of the Reform Party and others on the more conservative end of the
spectrum.
Finally, because of technical considerations and in order to provide a
meaningful discussion we have to limit the number of people in this debate.
Four is a manageable number. We proposed an equal number of participants
for another debate on our Saturday Morning news program with an equal amount
of time. We would promote this in advance to make our audience aware of the
opportunity to hear even more leaders debate the issues. The Marijuana
Party, through its president, Marc Emery, has declined this invitation.
I would like to conclude by saying that we are making every effort to
include as many ideas and opinions as possible in our coverage. But with 34
registered parties in B.C. it is impossible to include everyone in every
event.

The marijuana party has a better chanch of being the opposition than the NDP. For some reason BCTV is intentionally excluding the BCMP. The green party? The Unity party? There is something wrong. I say flood BCTV with emails about the subject demanding that the BCMP is to be let into the debates.

Good idea. I'm thinking of pointing out how they're going to be the loser in all this - what could better liven up the debates than having a MP leader participate? Who doesn't believe that their viewership wouldn't have been better with the MP there? I think they would have gotten some excellent soundbites too.
With all due respect the Brian, I think Marc would have been perfect for such a debate. All the same, for our first time out, we're doing extremely well. We'll be ready for the next time.

Why did Marc decline this invitation? Does he want to get the message out or is this about his ego?

Its called a publicity stunt, not a campaign. Marc is trying to sell magazines and seeds, not democracy.
