Drug and driving habits - psychological survey

Hello
My name is Susannah Boubaker and I am a Final Year Psychology Student at the
University of Leeds. I am currently conducting a study concerned with
driving habits and lifestyles (in particular drug use) of regular drivers. If you drive a vehicle on
public roads regularly I would really appreciate it if you would just take 5
minutes to complete a simple questionnaire about your lifestyle and driving
habits. You get to the questionnaire by clicking on the following link:

All answers are completely confidential and anonymous. The data produced
will be seen only by myself, Andy Sutton (the host of the questionnaire web
facility) and my project supervisor. However you will not be able to be
identified by any person at any time as all answers are strictly anonymous.
You are not obliged to answer any question which you feel may be too
personal, and can withdraw from the study at any time by simply exiting the
web page.

Hi: Your research sounds interesting, but marijuana users are a persecuted minority, and they are justifiably suspicious about identifying themselves in any way that can be traced.
I would also like you to provide some information about your paradigms and orientation. What are you hoping to find with your study? Who is funding it? Is your academic and/or personal orientation pro-marijuana legalization or against it? Why? What drugs are you comparing in your study? Who will receive the results? How can members of the cannabis culture be assured that you are not a government agent or anti-marijuana person? What benefit is it for us to cooperate with your project? How would your project benefit the marijuana legalization movement?

Steve,
What a lot of questions! I'll try to sort them out one by one.
Firstly, the question about being traced/identified. I don't know how to
prove it but please take my assurance that it is completely anonymous and I
have no interest whatsoever in tracing anyone. I am not a computer whizz and
wouldn't know where to start finding out who sent answers! All the data is
automatically transported into a statistics package (SPSS) where all answers
are identified by numbers only. After that I enter a few equation
instructions, the software crunches the numbers and I get a statistical
answer to my hypothesis. I totally take your point about not wanting to be
identified, that is why I haven't asked for names, email addresses etc in
the form. If you would like any more reassurance about whether or not data
can be traced you could contact Andy Sutton who hosts the facility at
Nottingham Trent University (ESS department). The only people who have
access to the data will be myself, Andy Sutton and my project supervisor who
will mark my project. Even then though all data will be anonymous, and just
a collection of numbers in a spreadsheet type format.
I do have a hypothesis that the study is based upon, but purely in the
interest of not allowing anything to jeapordise my results I am not in a
position to divulge it to you. It's no big secret and I will let you know as
soon as my research is complete (in about 6 weeks), it just would be bad
scientific practice as it could open up my project to biases.
As I am an undergraduate student I receive no funding for my study, it is a
necessary part of my degree course, except for help towards photocopying
costs and library loans. Although not too good for me, it does help the
research to remain unbiased as no particular group is trying to influence
the results and ensure that the outcome is what they would like (as is the
case with a very large number of so-called 'unbiased' studies)

My personal orientation towards the use of cannabis is completely neutral,
not particularly for it or against it. I do agree with legalisation for a
variety of reasons, mainly because I believe it to be no more harmful than
alcohol, in fact probably much less so. I think it has been clumped in
amongst with the harder drugs simply as bad luck, it could just have easily
have been alcohol which was banned. I am not a regular smoker purely because
I prefer a drink, but a great number of my friends are and I have no problem
with it whatsoever.
Anyone who emails me can request the results. My tutors at university will
see them and if it is a really good piece of work I could get it published
in a psychological journal, but I doubt it will be up to that standard!
I don't know how you can be totally sure I'm not who I say I am, but I
suppose you could ring the Psychology department at the University of Leeds
and find out.
There is no specific benefit for you in completing my form, but you are
helping me a great deal in getting a degree!
If my research goes the way I hope that it will and is published then the
findings WILL be beneficial to the marijuana legalization movement - so far
all indications are it will. If they don't go the way I would like I am more
likely to blame my research methods than the findings!

description of the study just email me and I will be sure that you get it
when I've finished the project!

Let me try to help you understand the trace ability aspect. As the director of software for an internet site, I can tell you that everything is traceable. It is easy to obtain who accessed this web site via information logged with the domain hosting company. That information contains, through which domain a user accessed this web site, as well as what date and time they did, and the IP address for that session. From there authorities can trace whom via that individuals ISP. It is far too easy. With the who established, this would allow authorities to run license plate numbers and viola, you have a hot sheet of license plate numbers for traffic stops. Since they responded to your request for information about driving while under the influence; those that might respond that they drive while high, could be used as probable cause to search and sobriety test. This is all just too, too risky.

Man I pitty you poor growers in the USA...it must be freaky! As for your comments, I don't care at all if someone traces ME! I have let many political officials and law enforcement agencies know about my views on this "hot" issue here in Canada. Unlike in your country, small medicinal gardens are definetly not priority here. I would say that the Canadian law enforcement officers/agnecies have made some sort of half ass effort to hone down on busting moderatly sized, even recreational gardens; usually they are more concerned with the GOD DAMN BORDER and large scale operations, because of your rediculus government' influence!
Peace brother and be carefull out there! ALthough I do really feel that survey is fine for all. mabye someone else can "check it out" for you American folks down south.
PS You guys all grow where you post? Someone should trick the DEA sometime, then sue there ass off for millions!

Oh yea, forgot... You really think the DEA would have a data base of all stoned drivers, even with out criminal records, then have the ability to check them in an instant? Don't you think they would check to see if the plates were stolen first...probably not in that crazy country!

I'll answer the survey if you put a link in that works. I don't care who knows whether or not I smoke pot. Yeah and I drive high too, that's right! In the past I used to drive under the influence of ....... alcohol!!! THAT was stupid.

You have surprised me! However the host of the facility is not permitted to release the data to anyoune but myself and I have no interest in doing that and no ability to do it either!
Correction - the questionnaire is not attempting to see how people drive when under the influence, it merely asks how you drive generally. I don't want to reveal the exact nature of my study but it may surprise you to know that I am not interested in how cannabis effects driving, it is about something completely unconnected than can be measured indirectly by driving style, but is nothing at all to do with driving! For that reason I was not wanting people to answer it how they would drive when stoned, I want to know how they drive normally. Maybe I should have made it clearer!

Like the attitude!
And I totally agree with you, to be honest I think that the police have got better things to do than track down small time users. Besides, whatever anyone does say in a survey can't be used as a basis for prosecution, you could have made it all up!
I think people can be a bit paranoid, I really don't think police will be getting themselves excited about this!

PS I don't think you realise, I am actually from England where virtually all of the Government have admitted to cannabis use, even the Prime Minister's father-in-law!

If the DEA or some other institution wanted to bust people they'd just track down people who post garden pics in the pot pic gallery. They wouldn't waste all this effort and time just to catch a couple of casual smokers.
Just my view on the whole thing.

susannah, an observation. w/o noting IP addresses to keep track of how many times a person answers your survey, your results could be skewed by just one (or a couple more) people who anonymously fill out your survey more than once. in the real world you can control this by ensuring every person only has one printed survey to respond to but in cyberspace you have no means of guaranteeing your results will not be skewed by some saboteur(s).

Well Sue,
Fact of the matter is, when I don't smoke before driving, I am dangerous. Sometimes violent cramping, virtually eliminated by a finely rolled joint of Kali Mist, impeded my ability to drive.
Therefore, normal and stoned are one and the same!

Thanks a lot for your help. I was actually aware of this problem and after discussions with my tutor it has been decided that if the SPSS package which is used to analyse the data statistically throws up any strange outlying data then I shall check the whole data set for that respondent before allowing it to be included. If it looks false, it won't go in. However it is still a major limitation of my study, and one which shall be mentioned in the discussion.

I found the survey quite well done, but some of the questions were a little confusing for non-British participants. Pelican crossing??

Thanks very much for your nice comments!
The driving section of the study is taken from a larger questionnaire called the Driver Behaviour Questionnaire which was used only in Britain. I talked about this problem with my tutor but she decided that the project isn't worth so many marks as I have to change it all. Instead I put in a country of residence question, so I can check that if I get any strange answers!

Paranoid? Of course we in the states are paranoid! It isn't just the DEA that would be interested. State, city, county and sherrif law enforcement agencies are always looking to bust anybody having anything to do with pot. Do you know, such agencies can even review your electricity comsumption to determin a market increase in use. Should they see an incident, they can even come knocking on the door to ask about it. I wish our country were as tolerant as Canada or the UK, but the sad fact is, it is not! A person can be busted and convicted for intent to distribute by growing just 2 plants in our country. Sorry, these facts are so bothersome to some, but this is the kinda crap we have to live with. Rather than everybody slamming, how about some empathy?

Hello everybody! This is an update on the study. I have now completed my study and the results were in favour of marijuana legalisation - it was mentioned as a recommendation for future action in my report. However, even though I had a lot of responses (around 260, which was good for the time span), this is not enough for a publishable article that may influence policy. Therefore I am actually keeping the study going for a few months, and the results will be re-analysed after approx 1500 reponses. For that reason, although I did promise to reveal the purpose of the study, I'm afraid I can't - that is unless my tutor thinks the whole thing is crap and decides it wouldn't get published anyway!!!!
As for the link problem, I'm very sorry it doesn't work for you. 3 people so far have reported this problem, 1 of which I know often has problems when clicking links so maybe it's something to do with the computer? Have you tried typing the address into the address bar?

That info about the anonymous web browsers is excellent, I wish I had known about this and had mentioned it from the start in my invitation messages. I might have had a lot more replies.
Incidentally, if it is so easy to trace people who respond to websites, why don't they have a team cracking down on every single sick mother fucker paedophile who looks at pictures of innocent kids(excuse the language but I feel very strongly about this), and throw them in a pit of boiling tar?
