Three different threads trashing High Times, and their biggest defender so far is Dana!!!!

Actually Dana is not defending them, if I understand him right, he is just trying to keep the level of this discussion above swearing and name calling.

Cool with me. But this discussion could use some feedback. Were are all those oh-so-sophisticated New York leftists that HT suckles up to? Can anyone out there give any intelligent reason for defending HT, or claiming HT is better than CC??????

Can not think of any myself. CC RULES!! But I am willing to listen.

Anyone????

The only thing 'cool' I have ever liked about HT is there center fold things. I had alot of them, and still do, hanging all over the place. That is about all I can find good, except maybe the occasional grow article may spread some small light on some issues (what can I say, they taught me how to prune..), but then again what marijuana growing site cant do that?

I fully agree with DankNugget, and that's being mild...
I am glad that this new thread is here, because I think people should be able to give critics on things that they don't like.
As we are on the subject, I want to shoot some shit at the Dutch Cannabis Magazines, and I think I know.

Both owners of Highlife and Essensie magazine are non smokers, how about that?

After I was told to kill my joint in Essensie's office, while paying cash for an ad, I refused to handshake with Wim, the publisher and owner, from that day I have not been there nor in their magazine.

I don't blame them, I am all marihuana, Essensie is polluted with all possible harddrugs anyway, I don't want to mix with that.
Their frontpage has not shown weed for a year!

My opinion: Essensie stinks, and it ain't after weed....

Highlife is another story, I have clashed with Boy, the owner, on several occasions, we just don't like eachother, that's clear,

They also leeched our dopedeal webcam from www.wwwshop.nl
put in their site and made us pay for the data transfer.

My opinion: Highlife is not so high...

That's why I contacted CC mag to help me promote the Cannaquiz, it's an all marihuana magazine!!

That's all.

you don't have to be a wizz to win the Cannaquiz!

HIGH TIMES REEKS new [Post#: 93940 / re: 93938 ]

What High Times is and does is notjust a problem of what type of magazine you like, like Newsweek verses Time, for example. It is that High Times is one reason marijuna is still illegal, both in how they have portrayd smokers (as dumbass juvenile delinquents) and in hidden things theyhave done to cooperate with police and to hurt people who are trying to legalize.

One reasonthey don't want to legalize is because they are part of a consortium of mafia/commercial growers who totally love black market prices. Another reason is that if legalizing happens, they can't so easy sell dangerous fake bud shit to kids. They do that totally for money. They admit that. They know its bogus but they dont care.

Someof the people who are not ontheir staff ar ok people, and i have met them and they tell me about how they wait for several months or years to get paid and that Steve Bloom and Steve Hager and Malcum Mackinnen especially are just themost conceited untrustable people in the world, which Ihave also experienced as a concert promoter. These guys will screw you and thenlaugh about it. Ask Bill Conde in Oregon, he'll tell you straight up what theyre all about.

Wheni have met two of the other ones, goreman and latimer, they have always been drunk. Goreman bragged in one issue about how he sells booze in South America and sits drinking with DEAagents and tells them how to stop coca farmers and exporters. Hes a narc. Latimer is a bitter old has-been who opposes medicalmarijuana and isnt a stoner at all. He's on the sauce.

Their youngerstaffmembers are a joke too ,PotStar, well the name says it all right, and chris semenintheneck, read his marilynmanson article alone and you can see why everybody hates this pompous little rooster. Kushman is ok, except that he works for High Times. Cervantes is a sellout ho who lies about emery seeds even though if it wasnt for CC where would his lame ass be?

It just goes on and on. They are a greedy corporationthat the WTO would be proud of, they are all about money, and they are openly tryingto ruin Marcemery, they are the ones who are in with the spammers who lie about emery on the forums and they told me that if i havea concert i cant have pete brady there as a speaker and can't advertise in CC. They tell other people this as well. I told them to go F themselves. They said without us your concert won't get any business, well they were wrong so that's that. I don't need High Times at all. Nobody does!!!

I have some closing suggestions cuz I gotta go:

Have Hager or any of them go on pot-tv to debate emery or brady and let the truth come out.

Dana, please stop defending High Times. Your job as a rival and as somebody who wants to clean the movement should be to expose them. Dont close threads where the culture is telling what it needs to tell about High Times.

High Times, stop being assholes and greedy morons. Then you can have the same good feelingabout you that CC has about it and people will like you getter. Right now, you are despised.

Everybody subscribe to CC and go to the magazine stores with a copy of it and say, hey, carry this magazine instead of High Times.

Heads magazine is an HT front run by HT staffers and it sux too, also not paying its workers and is a copy of Mountain Freak and CC. F Heads!

Stay away from pigs in badges and those people like High Times who smoke pot but are all about money and dumbassness.

To all who fight to free the weed, I salute you!

Gethealthy: What was the story with Ed Rosenthal's split with HT? Do not remember reading WHY the split happened in CC and I KNOW HT did not cover it. Ask Ed was 50% of the reason I subscribed to HT for several years.

Activist1: How did HT screw Bill Conde? I was there at the WEE1 in Eugene, at WEE3 in Columbus, OH, and the two last Hempfests held by CC and Conde in Eugene, OR.

WEE3 was right after Woodstock 2000, so they had some bigger name bands, but the last two Hempfests at Conde's totally, and I mean totally kicked ass over WEE3. More and nicer people, more and better vendors, and so on. Really broke my heart to hear Bill Conde say he could not take the heat anymore and was selling the land and leaving the country.

I e-mailed HT before the last Hempfest and asked how come they did not list Hempfest in their events calender. Got a reply back saying the reason was, "Nobody told us about it"

A yearly festival, on the same land, by the same people that held their WEE1, and they don't know anything about it. Could not believe they thought i would buy such a shallow lie. No reply at all would have been better.

Heard talk at the last Hempfest that some other people take it up and hold it somewhere else nearby in Oregon. Does anybody have any info on this? If there is another Hempfest, I got to be there.

Still no HT defenders? What is the matter guys? Too ashamed to write?

If you guys are so smart, why don't you make your own magazine, and quit bitchin' like a bunch of little girls... I love C.C. but I also like my vintage issues of High Times(80's and early 90's). I don't think you guys should be bashing like that, especially on here, what's the point ?? The guys at High Times will never see this, and even if they did I bet they don't give a damn what you say about them.... I guess this is an old, old subject for me, because I was hip to their subversive tactics 8 years ago when me and my best friend got into a fist fight over an article, I split his head and I went to jail, for a few days. Oh, and he was defending High Times.... They used to say the internet was "Big Brother" lol.... That wasn't what the argument was all about but it was part of it... It really bums me out to come on here and read bash post after bash post......

Here's an interesting article from Salon.com, July 2000. It covers CC, HT and Heads, and the competition between us. It's quite a good article, weel worth a read to anyone interested in the conflicts between all of our magazines.

http://www.salon.com/business/feature/2000/07/19/dope/index.html

Here's an excerpt:

"Steve Hager did not mince words while dismissing the accusations made by his antagonists. Calling Cannabis Culture a "seed catalogue with aspirations of being a magazine," Hager wrote "We deny the allegations and despise the alligators," and, referring to Cannabis Culture, added: "They want to hitch their wagon to our star. What little they know about marijuana they learned from us. Their need for publicity causes them to say anything to get attention."

And in response to that article, here's a letter by Mari Kane, which is found here:

http://www.salon.com/letters/daily/2000/07/24/dope/

Thanks for running the article "Pot Shots." Knowing most all the guys mentioned, I would have to weigh in on the side of Cannabis Culture, possessors of much more integrity than the crowd at High Times. Here is my experience with High Times:

Predatory at their core, High Times was successful in putting out of business my low-budget, highly respected journal, HempWorld, by launching a glossy, cheesy version called Hemp Times. Backed by High Times and allegedly using profits that were supposed to benefit NORML, Hemp Times made it a practice to give away much of its advertising to hemp companies in exchange for product they sold in the Planet Hemp boutique. Its editorial content focused almost exclusively on its advertisers.

One year after the three other North American hemp publications went under, Hemp Times finally drowned in its own swill, leaving the hemp industry with no all-industrial publication. Pity, they could have bought HempWorld when I offered it to them in 1995, but being the way they are, they decided to compete rather than cooperate.

Overall, High/Hemp Times promoted a type of premature greed and avarice within the young and fragile hemp industry, while causing much divisiveness. High Times could be easily described as the Microsoft of the cannabis publishing business.

The reason to tellthe truth about Low Times is the same reason to tell the truth about cops and drug war pols- I want to legalize and anybody who hurts that hurts me!

We can't go around pointing fingers at the straights and cops and hypocrites when we have liars and conn artists in our own midst who pretend to be "the magazine of the counterculture" when actually they are the "corporation who ripped off NORML, F'ed Forcade's dream, and screwedthe counterculture."

I'm sure that Haggard and all the other boyz at HT are seeing what we say here and on overgrow, and they are noticing that their ragis getting no good publicitywhile Emery is being rightfully praised becuz he keeps working harder and harder to wake up the world to pot.Im just waiting for one of those lowlifes to get some balls and go head to head with emery or brady or dana on pottv and then we will see who's the real activists and who are the corporate whores.

Low Times has deepdark secrets and people are gonna keep on them until they change their ways or go out of business. If Low Times stops selling fake trash buds to kids and pays me back the money they owe me I might go ezier on them.

By the way I hear that Conde is goingto do the Hemp festival again this year in the same place in Eugene!!!!

Thanks for the info on Hempfest Activist1. So you have heard that Bill Conde will have another Hempfest again in 2001? That would be so great!!! Seattle's gets more people, WHEE gets more advertisement, but Hempfest is where the PEACE AND POT people gather.

TMorgan: Understand where you are coming from. You do not like the HT bashing. Okay, some of the bashing is crude. However I think your comment about 'Little whiny girls' was also an uncalled for bashing. Nobody I have heard comment is complaining about meaningless things, like the cover of HT or their hairstyles of their models.

These people are complaining about lies, ripp offs, and sabatoge HT staff have done to individual people, other hemp activist/product organizations, and the general public.

The truth is on the Hemp activists, our side. Therefore we must expose ALL truth as much and widely as possible. It does not matter if the lie comes from the US President, the DEA, or High Times. We NEED the general public to understand the truth. Any lie, by anyone on either side blocks the truth and hurts us all.

HT, in my opinion, has found their money 'niche' in undereducated, angry, urban youth. Enough of these people will buy HT, fake buds, and the silly conspiracy politics to keep the money flowing in. I do still subscribe to HT, only for the bud picts and the occasional good grow article.

And, in my opinion, I think they do care about we say, think and do. After splitting with Bill Conde after WHEE1, Bill and CC went on the to hold THREE more HEMPFESTS that were bigger and better than their WHEE2,or 3.

They also know that HT and NORML have been totally useless in the hemp legalization movement. HT staff has been forced into only reporting on what the REAL ACTIVISTS are doing, mostly on the WEST Coast.

Mark, Dana, and CC staff and supporters are changing the world more and faster than HT ever tryed too. I am sure they notice.

gethealthy= The old creator killed himself?! I dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing?!

TMorgan+ Well aside from the fact if we started a magazine, we wouldnt have near the credability that C does, just be creating some extra competition for CC (even though it would only sell like 5 copies globaly) and we would just be going over what CC says in there magazine. If I ever made a marijuana magazine of any kind, I would fashion it just like CC because CC is the greatest magazine. Everything from there lay-outs on the page to the way the articles are written to the extremely helpful grow articles, and the famous AskEd.

BTW, I bought the latest version of CC yesterday (better late then ever, tough finding a place that stocks it..) and noticed that I was one of the people he mentioned for the 'Your the Expert'! I dont know if I got the right answer, or if they just put the names of the people who wrote an answer and sent it, but im in there! (im 'Yannick'!).

So anyways, CC rules, HT doesnt. I like my marijuana news shaken, not stirred. And an olive in it. Yes, like the kind they sell at the Safeway:)

As publisher of Cannabis Culture, I read thoroughly every issue of High Times.

Some observations:

Even though there are some good facts and freedom fighters portrayed properly, the magazine's cynical commercial (fake shit ads, ) marketing , what with their sucking up to the east coast music industry, their vain, egomania (POTSTAR, Simuniak's Paradise Burning -Simuniek is a complete drunk much of his public time), their hopelessly dated retro-leftism and cheesy unwashed laundry of the rainbow people (what a contrast, fake bud ad karma vs a back to the earth search for meaning) mixed with dollops of New York/USA paranoia...

Hedonism central passing itself off as the movement. Ugh. I told my staff at our 2000 Christmas staff & friends party that if High Times were the only North American mag about the movement, I would sincerely weep. Its a heartless group of distrustful, back biting paranoid New Yorkers under a weird Peter Pan meets the Twilight Zone leadership of Steve Hager (who, after I wrote a review of the 1995 Cannabis Cup as the disorganized mess it is, accused Ed Rosenthal of actually writing the article and threatened to have Ed fired because, as Hager put it, "I know he wrote it".

Steve has never thanked me even once for distributing High Times throughout Canada when their own distributor and lawyers wouldn't challenge the Canadian gov't ban, that period is May 1994 to mid 1995.

Every High Times event has been atrociously organized. Every single person you'll ever meet who ever had anything to do with High Times has a jaded outlook now.

Contemptible people, contemptible magazine.

Hit the nail right on the head Mark.

TMorgan: My suspicions also went into overdrive the first time i saw the POTSTAR article. Read a few articles, and never, not once, could I find this guy Chris write about anything like he had ANY expert knowledge about POT. Nothing. From then on, just ignored the article like I do 90% of the others in HT. But did always wonder WHY it was there.

Then a few issues ago saw a new ad. A book on "HOW YOU CAN BE A POTSTAR". Almost lost a few days lunch. A complete know nothing, with no skill at writing, growing, smoking, or understanding pot gets his own article in High Times.

And now High Times wants to sell you a book on how to be just like him.

Does anybody else smell a another dishonest marketing scam?

Think about it. Who did they have as a mascot? Chef RA - a fake Rastifarian empty of any religion or spirituality.

How do they make their money? Selling fake buds

Idea High Times Staff!!! We can take these people for more money by creating a fake Pot Star, then selling books about him.

Enough!!!!!! High Times is so deep in bad karma it hurts me to think about them. Going to go smoke me a bowl made possible by the GOOD karma people of Vancouver, BC.

That Salon article Dana posted the link to seems a little inaccurate:

"It was begun as Cannabis Canada in 1995 by Marc Emery, a Canadian pot-seed impresario with a profitable mail-order business. To this day, Emery's seed listings, which subsidize Cannabis Culture, take up 10 pages at the front of the magazine, coming before even the masthead and table of contents."

I have an old copy of Cannabis Canada and theres no seed catalog in it at all, the table of contents is on page 4, including the cover as page 1. So by saying 'to this day' they are implying that the first 10 pages of the magazine has always been the seed catalog, or advertisements which is not the case. There is a 4 page Hemp BC catalog that appears in the middle and no sign of seeds for sale. So for Salon to claim that the magazine's origins were to augment a seed catalog is entirely erroneous.

It's true that the magazine didn't have a seed catalog for the first few issues. I remember the day that Marc decided to run the seed catalog in CC instead of the Hemp BC catalog. It created a bit of conflict over some who felt that it made us too reliant on the unstable seed business. But we had been raided previously and were in financial trouble. Marc figured that the seeds were bringing in more money and that was the way to go. And he was right.

Nowadays I see CC and the Emery Seeds catalog as having a very symbiotic relationship.

I guess this whole argument frustrates me. I see allot of people saying "High Times sucks ass!" and then not backing themselves up. I also see alot of people who do back themselves up. I have been a HT subscriber for years. Some of the arguments make sense, and allot of them are simple belly-aching.

I agree that HT portrays the cannabis enthusiast as a "stoner". And many of their stories are simply brushing the surface of the real issues. They need to work long and hard at improving their journalism skills. The fake drugs crap has got to go too. I would be willing to pay more to subscribe so that the magazine can be filled with journalistic excellence rather than trashy advertisement.

On the other hand, CC is a very hard working and truthful magazine. I praise Mark and everyone at CC for all that they do for the cannabis culture. All of the things coming out of Canada are excellent (POT-TV, Emery Seeds etc.) I wish I had such praise for the movement in the United States.

I just think that this debate needs to be elvated from the name calling I so often see. Let's present the facts. Let's show everyone the truth. No name calling will be necessary then.

Well I for one continue to purchase both HT and CC.I agree with everyone else though, the fake pot and oils really do need to go the way of the dodo.
I read every article in CC,but when my monthly issue of HT arrives, the first thing I go to is the centerfold, and then the growers section,I very rarely find interest in the rest of the mag. Hey Dana, how 'bout a centerfold in CC?
Peace.............KY

For the last two years I have been active w/events in NY state,an experience which nearly destroyed my activism...
What I have learned from this traumatic brush with HT and some of the activist promoters that ally with HT is that it's about money....... and sushi bars....
From a distance these people and this mag. (HT) appear to represent the interests of the MJ movement, but the bottom line is money. How much they can make and how much can they keep... I'm not against making a profit but to rake in the kind of cash these people do and not put nothing back into the movement but crumbs! Thats a crime... against us all..
Enjoyed the CC article "Hidden Harvest" It was a magic event where I became "enlightened"...
Now I'm all depressed... later
