WASHINGTON, DC -- The Peruvian air force or drug traffickers are not to blame for the tragic incident that killed a Baptist missionary and her child last week, say Libertarians -- the blame falls squarely on the U.S. government's lethal and destructive War on Drugs.
"Pro-Drug War politicians are responsible for the death of these innocent people as surely as if they fired the machine gun that strafed the small plane and sent it spiraling down in flames," said Steve Dasbach, Libertarian Party national director.
"The fact is, American politicians created and funded the program that shot down this plane in Peru. Now these same politicians must be held accountable for the deaths of a Christian missionary and her infant daughter -- no matter how frantically they try to wash their blood-stained hands."
Over the past week, politicians have been pointing fingers about who is to blame for the incident in South America last Friday, in which the Peruvian air force shot down a small plane carrying a family of Baptist missionaries and a pilot.
The Cessna was strafed and forced to crash land in the Amazon after a CIA-operated surveillance plane mistook the missionaries for drug smugglers.
Killed in the crash were Veronica Bowers -- who friends said "died in pursuit of her life's calling" -- and her 7-month-old daughter, Charity. Her husband, son, and the pilot survived.
In response, the U.S. government may send officials to Lima for talks with Peruvian officials about "what went wrong," and Secretary of State Colin Powell suggested on Thursday that the blame lay with American celebrities like Robert Downey, Jr. who use drugs.
But Robert Downey, Jr. didn't vote to start funding a program to encourage foreign governments to shoot down planes -- or publicly describe that missionary-killing program as a "very successful policy," countered Dasbach.
"We don't need a detective to figure out who's to blame for this senseless murder," he said. "All we need to do is look at U.S. House and Senate voting records." Consider:
* U.S. politicians created the air surveillance and interdiction program in 1992 -- and since then the U.S. government has helped the Peruvian military shoot down or strafe more than 100 airplanes.
* The U.S. government now spends $731 million a year providing military and other aid to South American countries for anti-drug operations.
* It was a U.S. Air Force jet -- operated by CIA employees -- that spotted the missionaries' plane and called it to the attention of the Peruvian military.
* On Tuesday, Senator Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), chair of a Foreign Relations panel, bragged about the "shoot-first, ask-questions-later policy" that murdered the American missionaries. Chafee said giving Peruvian military officials the power to blast civilian planes out of
the sky is "a very successful policy."
Such comments amount to a frank confession of guilt, said Dasbach.
"What could be more chilling -- or more revealing -- than to hear a U.S. Senator publicly applaud a policy that caused the deaths of two innocent Americans?" he asked. "Could a South American drug lord have a less wanton disregard for human life?
"Unfortunately, shooting down civilian airplanes in South America isn't a U.S. foreign policy mistake -- it is U.S. foreign policy. And Veronica Bowers and her baby have become nothing more than collateral damage of that policy, and of their own government's savage and senseless War on Drugs.
"That's why what really needs to be shot down is this lethal policy -- before politicians cause even more American lives to be lost."

Well said insurgent. The facts speak for themselves although the evil fascists in Washington will continue to lie and con the weak minded American public, complicit as they are in this evil madness. The politicians don't give a damn if innocent mothers and babies are wantonly slaughtered; after all they're not really important, not really significant. Dead babies and mothers are just a public relations problem. A little spin here, a little spin there, throw in a few commercials and some mindless TV programming and the Pavlovian public will be back to normal with absolutely no memory at all of what happened and no sense of right and wrong except what they are told by the media-political machine. Hell, in no time at all the public will be chomping at the bit to go get some more drug kingpins and drug lords, and Hey, if a few mothers and babies and other innocent people get their brains blown out then that's ok. After all you can't make an omlette without breaking few eggs, right?
One of these days, perhaps in the next life (if there is a next life) I hope to Holy Hell that every human that had a hand in participating in, backing, promoting or otherwise supporting this loathsome evil, aka Drug War, will be called before a court to be judged for their complicity. And who might the judges be you ask? Any and all who have suffered from and were victimized by the evil Drug War. This is one court I want to sit on personally.

My custodian in Junior High was the aunt of one of the missionaries killed. What did any of them do to deserve this?

What the HELL is the CIA doin shooing down airplanes? Even in war there is something called the rules of engagement. You do not fire upon an unarmed plane. Even if it was armed they can't REALLY shoot it down unless it provokes an act of war.

Why would you send a fully armed SWAT team on a midnight raid into the home of a legally blind, over 60 year old man, with your only evidence a blurry, aerial photograph of what might be one pot plant(it was not). Why would you kill him? Why were none of the killers or masterminds of the murder arrested and jailed?
You are correct Ben. International law spelled out in the Geneva Convention are suppose to stop war crimes like the killings in Peru and in the US.
The Drug War was created as a way for the powerful in government to control minority populations. The US has corrupted most other nations into spreading the Drug War to control their own minority populations.
Human Rights, Geneva Convention, Constitution, laws. All can be broken in the Drug War.
Acceptable genocide.

Exactly.
Besides being a machine producing cheap prison labor, police dep funding and an excuse to molest the lower classes, the drug war is Uncle Sams way of justifying hegemony.
For some reason it wouldn't fly if we just beat everyone up openly w/o reason like the old powers used to do, but if we claim it's to destroy poppies and coca then it's all alright.
If I was running a country in South America I would legalize out right and refuse to cooperate with the US while my economy fourished from drug trade. Fuck the Americans.

I now am quite angry that my beliefs have been varified about this issue. The more i think about it the more things i see wrong with this situation. If anyonw knows an email address where i could contact one of the members of the families i would ike to ask them a few things. I sincerly hope they take action against the US government and hopefully set a president. If they can do whatever they want whats stoping them from doing it in Canada? (to an extent they have been already). The DEA and the FBI is giving funding and doing it's own investigations on candian soil as we speak. In towns along the border in BC, American agencies provide funding and heavy persuasion to crack down on marijuana growers. The RCMP doesn't give a fuck about growers. No one in BC does. The problem isn't really our own government it's the one down south.
