hmm, bugs scare me..! new [Post#: 114379 ]

Welp... I got 9 seedlings going right now under a 4ft floro fixture.. They are in 16 oz cups. Anyway... Yesterday i noticed some gnat looking critters flying around the plants/floro... My question is... will these pose as a threat to the grow.. If so what should i do? I DO NOT want to loose these seeds... they are stinkygirls... which are now harder to get if you are american.

I would say that they are fungus gnats-I have had the same problem. While the adults don't seem to be a big deal, the (larvae?) mature in the soil and feed on roots-and can eventually mess things up. I control them with yellow pest strips from Wal Mart-the adults get caught-can't reproduce and eventually the last larval generation is captured. I have also heard that you can use nematodes, but I don't know where to buy those.

Hey Jeez,
I have the same problem.PurpleDurban is right the yellow sticky cards will attract the adults. As for the larvae, they feed on the root hairs and can harm the plant(s) if gone unhindered. You can get some nematodes, but I found them a tad too expensive for my taste,so I am using the sticky cards as my lone offensive against them right now.

Yeah, it does suck but what sucks more is that fungus gnats come with alot of bagged soil-anyone know a brand that is gnat-free?
