what's the skinny on co2?

I've read a number of opinions here regarding co2...I'm a first timer (as my username suggests) so patience and understanding is greatly appreciated. Two questions for the pot-people:
1)How important is c02? (my enterprise is very modest. One nice plant in a closet about 5'x 2')
2)Since I don't need a giant tank for such a small set-up, would a fermentation tub be advisable, and if so what would be the correct mixture?
Well, that's actually three questions, but any suggestions would be grand.

If you are able and should be supplying your plant with a fresh air supply,co2 is not necessary.Co2 usually works in conjuction with higher temps and at least 80+ watts/sq/ft.Some growers will add some by adding a couple packs yeast and a couple cups sugar mixed with warm water in a 2 litre plastic pop bottle.Simple process.Make sure to have it above the plant as co2 is heavier than air and falls and a fan blowing or venting at the same time would defeat the process.It's beneficial but not necessary if an adequate fresh air and circulation is supplied..IMHO..PEACE..

C02 is an amazing gas if done correct. From what I saw in amsterdam co2 kicks ass. To do it correct recquires skill and a sense of knowledge and feeling on how to make the p.s.i perfect. I basically just use baking soda and vineger(spelling). Put this somehow on top of your plants so the co2 spreads out over the plants so they recieve the co2. Co2 is heavier than air so it will sink, and this method the co2 goes everywhere so its better that you close the door right away after pouring a little vinager inside the baking soda. Use Co2 during veg and not flower from what I read. Thats it for now, good luck.. Just pout like a bunch of baking soda in a pot and pout like a half a cup of vinager or some thing. Very easy but I don't know if it really helps that much. Your basically better off opening the door once in a while ya know?

Co2 in a small 5x2 area is likely not going to be much use as in order to reach lighting of 80+ per sq. ft your going to need a large light 800watts or larger and vent and exaust are going to be essential. When you have excessive temps (90degrees +) which you typically do when dealing with much more then 60 watts per sq. foot you end up adding exaust mechanisms to keep the temps in check. In instances where continuious exaust are needed to maintain acceptable temperatures it becomes impractible to use any form of Co2 as the atmospheric gasses in the grow area are likely being exausted at a rate varrying from once a minute to possibly 10 times + a minute.
Co2 is certainly worth the investment when its effective use is logical. Yields can be doubled and trippled by adding an additional 1000-1200PPM. However as OD stated its really only useful when you break the 80watts per sq. ft. mark. I've found a comfortable medium whereby with enough cooling can achieve 170watts + per sq. ft. and still manage to use (small) amounts of additional Co2 by controlling ventilation and exause with a tempstat.
If you can cool a room and keep its mean temp to about 72 degrees while achieving 80+ watts per sq. ft. (using a dedicated A/C to help with temps) then the use of Co2 is certainly worth it.
My new grow room is 8x4 (32 sq. ft.) I'm going to use (2) 1000 watt HPS lamps and 1 600 watt MH, This gives me a little over 80watts per sq. ft. substantially more when the effective growing area is truly only 6'6"X4'. With my exaust fans, stand up oscillating fans, air cooled reflectors, evaporative cooler, and A/C unit I should be able to keep temps down to about 75 or so... then I can cut off my exaust and let the room heat up... once the temps hit 88-90 I can have the exaust fans kick on . Then time the Co2 dispersion with the cutting on and off of your exausst fans so the plants are exposed to the enriched Co2 environment as long as possible. Otherwise no sooner do you release Co2 its exausted out of the room and does no good for hte plants.
