Pregnant mom smoking pot? [Post#: 95873 ]

Hi, sorry forgot to add this in my last post.
I don't know if I am going to get smashed for this or not, but. My girlfriend and I have been smoking together since we met, she is now pregnant, 6 months. Her and I still smoke on a regular basis. The thing is she is a very hyper person, and smoking tends to make her more relaxed. We never over do it, 1 to 2 joints a day. The doc knows we smoke we told him flat out we do, but could never offer any medical advice for us to stop, other than it was illegal. should we stop or not? like i said in my last post, we are scared of losing our kid.

thanks snipes42o

ps. a new member but been lurking around these forums for a while now.. and thanks in advance!

Why in god's name did you tell the doctor? Anyway, no evidence has linked smoking herb with fetal damage, so don't worry about that. Alcohol is the worst drug to take during pregnancy, cigarettes (tobacco) are supposed to be correlated with low birth weight.

You can trust doctors if you ask me...maybe if you told him you commercialy made crack by the pounds a day and sold it to school children they might turn you in, but I think you would be safe.

Your doctor cannot tell anyone, that's illegal. However, they will test your girlfriend for marijuana (and they don't have to ask) when she gives birth so make sure she's CLEAN before she goes in or the gov. will step in and then you'll have all sorts of hoops to jump through, privacy taken away, etc. Or go to a local birth center that you know is ok with that sort of thing. There's usually at least one in every town and, if you can, find out discreetly about their testing procedures.

I think smoking anything is obviously not good for your baby. I realize smoking 1-2 joints a day will most likely not harm your baby in any significant way. But, I have heard that smoking pot while pregnant can cause low birth weight too, it must be the lack of oxygen or carbon monoxide. If she has to use the herb while pregnant, why not try some cooking instead of smoking. The cannabutter recipes are easy, same with the milk/cream ones. I think this will be safer for your baby.

I wonder, will the THC have any effects on the fetus? Is it safe to eat pot while you are pregnant?

It depends on where you are located. In Canada, don't worry about it.

In the US, it's a concern. But it's a bigger concern if you are poor, non-white or live in a heavy drug war zone.

These were both provided by Dana in a previous post about Marijuana and it's affects on preganacy and the development of your child. I found them both to be quite fascinating and informative.

My wife is 5 months pregnant and the info Ive researched is pretty damn ambiguous(?). One site even said "like tobacco 20 years ago, not enough is known about the effects of marijuana on pregnancy to accuratly ascertain its effects" (paraphrasing). WHAT?!? Im pretty sure the advice against smoking while preggers was there 20 yrs ago, just not followed very often. And marijuana has been around for just a little while now. The most relevant information I found had to do with coughing and premature labor. I can see that getting pretty scary with some killer expanding bong hits.

Um, Marijuana's been around a LOT longer than "a little while" And there is a lot of ambiguos data available on the web...one thing that can help you find the answers you're looking for is to check who either funded or published the information you are reading. I read one study funded by a research chapter of DARE that actually claimed smoking marijuana could cause spontaneous abortions!!!
After tracking the info back to it's original source I found out that it stemmed from a study in which mice injected with a certain cannabinoid solution into their brain receptors would have a higher chance of a released egg being passed through their system instead of attaching to the uterus wall. Big difference! So you've really got to triple check your data.
I haven't found anything on coughing or any studies that had actual numbers for premature births either. The ONLY thing I could find was that "pot babies" had generally lower birth weights. But even that study admitted it could have been due to other substances....good luck

That's very unfortunate. Has the child been examined by a doctor and diagnosed? CT scans? Is the child normal in the rest of their motor skills/ thinking/ etc? What about speech therapy?
I certainly wouldn't just write it off as being MJs fault and then not deal with it...and nine is an awfully old age to be having such difficulties.

ooops..i forgot to edit my letter, i was supposed to say that it just as well might not be the mj that caused it.although she did smoke quite a bit..i could say she smoked more than just a couple joints a day..a lot more, also forgot to add that sometimes when a pregnant woman smokes marijuana doesnt necessarily cause speech problems, yet he is pretty old enough to be able to speak a clear sentence, although he doesnt.i feel for the mother, and she blames herself for it.but yeah,it is a possibility
that it wasnt pot that caused it.there have been many problems w/healthy and sober mothers giving birth to children w/mental illnesess. so your right,i could be wrong.

your not tested if you have private insurance...

anyhow.... my g/f is due in 6 weeks and she quit the day we found out she was pregnant. that dude says theres no study linking herb with fetal damage? yeah, thats because i dont think theyve DONE that study yet. ANY chemical that you put in your body when your pregnant is SHARED WITH THE BABY! if your high, the babies high.... if its frying your brain, its frying the kids brain too, or worse... not letting it develop properly.

i will NEVER believe that smoking ANYTHING during pregnancy can be safe, ITS NOT! herb is great when your old enough to concent to frying your head, but give the unborn at least a fighting chance!!

my g/f plans on smoking again after she gives birth and is done nursing, shes just not taking any chances now. you might like to play russian roulette with your kids life, but i sure dont! lay off the herb while your preg.. for the babies sake!!

SB5

two points

1. cannabis does not fry your brain: http://www.pdxnorml.org/Exposing_08_1095.html

2: cannabis does not harm the fetus (look - they have done LOTS of research on this topic):

this is a really good book and i suggest you buy a copy

I smoked with both of my kids. I never over did it and I didn't even smoke every day. I usually smoked if I felt nauseated(?) and it would help. Both of my kids are fine and I highly suggest not discussing it with your doctor. I also suggest smoking a joint once labor has begun and you are about 3-4 inches dialated. I also suggest a home birth with a midwife but that is another forum.

Although I do not believe marijuana smoking while pregnant harms the fetus, I support and applaud your girl friend's decision to stay on the safe side. I agree with sb5 about giving the unborn a fighting chance. There is so much that is not known about the developing mind that it only seems fair.

Rastafarian women have been smoking the ganja while pregnant, for reducing nausea, and for relaxing upon giving birth. It is used as a medicine.. In my opinion much safer than Pain killers before birth, which also affects the newborns.

It all depends on what you personally believe about the herb. Because there are no documentation of MJ harming or killing anyone.

Re: Pregnant mom smoking pot? new [Post#: 119409 / re: 95873 ]

Snipes,
If this helps ease your mind, here is my experience:
I've been a smoker for 14 years, and I have two children. With my first pregnancy, I was very paranoid about doing the "right thing" and I quit completely until the last month. At 9 months, I was beyond miserable with a lot of physical pains and problems, and my husband finally encouraged me to get some relief. So glad I did! Before my next pregnancy, I did a good amount of research, and like most here who have searched, I found that there have been almost no unbiased, scientific, controlled studies done. The one good piece of information I found included a follow-up with the children for several years (wish I would have saved it!). This study stated that it was difficult to find test subjects who ONLY smoked MJ and used no other "drugs" (cigs, alcohol, anything). Long story short...the only differences they found in the babies of mothers who smoked pot was a slightly lower birth weight (but this couldn't absolutely be attributed to pot because they smoked cigarettes also which are notorious for LBW) AND that a significant percentage of these children, only in the 3rd grade for some reason, tested HIGHER in language skills than their "normal" peers. In every other aspect they were consistent with their peers.
During my 2nd pregnancy, I smoked almost daily. It didn't start that way, I had intended to cut back, but it turns out that pot was the only relief I had from the 24hr nausea and vomiting that were so severe that I was almost admitted to the hospital for dehydration a few times. I was sick for seven of the nine months. I tried five different Rx meds and none of them worked as well as pot. They had very nasty side effects, too. My husband and I decided it was better to use the natural herb than to pour all that other useless chemical crap into my body. I'm happy to say it worked wonderfully. As for low birth weight, I think that is attributed more to the cigarette smoking. I've never smoked cigarettes, and I'm not a drinker (just don't have the stomach for it!), I don't do any other drugs (but whatever you choose to do is fine with me, I try not to judge). My kids turned out incredibly healthy, intelligent, and advanced. My 2nd was 8lbs 3oz, hardly frail! Neither one has ever had any type of major illness or disorder...actually they have hardly ever been sick at all. During my pregnancies, I decided not to tell my OB about my usage based on his background. I never had any medical problems that would require his knowing, so it wasn't much of an issue anyway.
After all of this, my opinion and my experience say that smoking pot is the least harmful thing your girlfriend could do right now. It's less harmful than cigarettes, definitley less than alcohol. Hopefully I eased your mind a little bit. I wish you both the best!
Oh, and I'm new to these forums also. :)

Regarding the bit aboug telling your doctor:

I've been told by a physician friend of mine (and regular herb smoker) that it is a bad idea to speak of illegal drug use to your physician. He confessed that most of the time they will help you without question, as they should; but he also says there are still way too many doctors with very negative opinions about drug use. Unless you can be sure (referred from a friend, doc is your friend, etc) that your doctor is cool with herbs, I'd keep it to myself. Regardless of the fact that your medical history is supposed to be confidential and he/she cannot reveal it to LEOs, there are still many other ways in which a doctor can have an affect upon someone he/she construes as a drain on society.

I guess decision this sort of falls in line with my own personal ideals. I want to look, act, and be as much of a potsmoker as I can be, but when the goverment or establishment comes knocking, never will I admit directly to them that I violated their ludicrous laws, because to do so would bring about a ridiculous violoation of my own personal freedoms.

Peace

Warning: Smoking marijuana may be hazardous to your ignorance.
