I love a good letter writing campaign. Especially when we're not sending form letters.
This is what I just wrote to Mr. Gordon....
I just read your reply to Mr. John Gordon, Marijuana Party candidate in the upcoming BC election (your reply has been posted on Pot-TV.net forums). I include this reply below for reference.
As a constituent in a Canadian Alliance Party riding in Alberta, I am offended by your outright lies and disinformation.
First, you state that illegal drugs are a curse on society. This is true. If these drugs were not illegal, there would be no curse. Do you not understand that like alcohol prohibition, drug prohibition is what perpetuates the existence of organized crime and related violence?
Certainly there is harm caused by cocaine, heroin (not heroine as you stated) and certain other drugs, but these harms would be better controlled through legalization and prescription distribution. To suggest that there is no place for the recreational use of these drugs in a developed society ignores the prevalence of alcohol, tobacco and caffeine by the general population.
In fact, marijuana is milder and less harmful than either alcohol, tobacco or caffeine, any of which can easily deliver a lethal dose, whereas marijuana has never caused a single death (or even serious deleterious effect) in 10,000 years of use.
As far as the gateway theory, you've got it backwards. These "studies" you refer to are blatantly biased, and only demonstrate that a separation of markets should occur. If marijuana users didn't have to access their herb of choice in the black market, most would never be exposed to more harmful drugs. If they were legalized there would be no black market.
As far as "conning our young people into thinking that mind altering drugs are beneficial", you must consider that the D.A.R.E. program teaches children that ALL drugs are dangerous, so when they first try marijuana and discover you are lying about its harms, they assume you are lying about all drugs, and are unafraid to try cocaine, heroin, ecstasy. Additionally, you preclude the possibility that these drugs can be beneficial. Isn't morphine (an opiate derivative) one of the most common pain killers used in hospitals today? Isn't marijuana proven to be effective for glaucoma, and anecdotally proven (since no legal studies have been allowed for years) to be effective as an anti-emetic for AIDS and cancer patients, and proven to reduce muscle spasm in MS patients? If you ignore the evidence you are ignorant.
There are many prescription drugs that are mind altering - Prozak, valium, and there are many mind altering activities which do not involve drugs (yoga, jogging). Human consciousness would not advance without an occassional mind-altering experience. Perhaps if you had one yourself you might reconsider your response to the "drug problem".
You state "If we go to the core of any large country we can see the devastating effects of drugs on society, Vancouver being a prime example." Well first of all, Vancouver is a city, not a country (yet). Have you ever heard of Holland? Hard drug usage is lower there than in the US or most any other "large country". How do you explain this?
I sincerely recommend you take some time to look into this with less biased eyes. You might learn something.
Will you change your tune when the Supreme Court of Canada rules the marijuana laws unconstitutional in the upcoming Caine/Clay/Malmo-Levine case? Will it be politically expedient for you?
I look forward to the next election, as far off as it may seem right now.
Sincerely,
Real name here.

Thanks for the feedback. I was just so outraged I had to write something right away.
It had already been sent by email when I posted this. I think it is worthwhile to let this guy know about pot-tv -- he's probably not literate enough to actually find his way through the forums, and if he finds pot-tv and watches a few shows maybe he'll learn.
Remember, we'd rather educate them then have some moral victory in a war of words.
BTW, the research is all in my head now! Mostly just regurgitated truth.
Note the "Cannaquiz results are in" post. THAT'S ME! I won 3rd place in the Cannaquiz!

Nope, not going to Haarlem. Not yet anyway. The CannaQuiz is at http://www.go2weed.com Willie Wortel's Workshop is at http://www.wwwshop.nl
There are links to all the related sites on the CannaQuiz site. You can join up for the second quiz and try to beat me!!
And thank you for your kind words.
I like to think that eloquence will overpower ignorance. Let's show them we've got more than just a head full of smoke.
And my continuing good wishes for you and for your campaign, Flash. I'm living in Alberta, otherwise I'd come out and vote for you (twice).

I just received this response to my email...
On behalf of Mr. Williams I acknowledge receipt of your email.
When asked for his perspective regarding illegal drugs, Mr. Williams provided a very clear statement: "Illegal drugs are a curse on our society. Cocaine, heroine and hallucinogenic drugs are dangerous. They destroy lives and they destroy societies. There is no place for the recreational use of these drugs in a developed society."
We note that you and Mr. Williams have a difference of opinion regarding this issue.
Yours truly,
Debra Bain, Manager Constituency Affairs
Well, DUH? A difference of opinion? He certainly has not addressed any of the other issues I expressed. Gotta love politicians.

rastaruss: followed your thread and I think your giving politicians far more credit then they deserve. they are ruthless trough sloppers that'll shake hands and kiss babies all the way to the polling station and then once elected they wipe their ass with the constitution and their constituency. while this may seem to be extreme it sadly enough isn't. for every thing positive they seem do there is an underbelly to it or else it's at someone's or something's expense. probably always has been. i don't see anything to suggest that that is about to change. what a bummer!
