Where have I given politicians any credit? I think they're all a bunch of thieving assholes, arms open to receive bribes and kickbacks.
I just wanted to let this particular asshole know what a fool he is. The point of writing is to let them know that we're out here. I point out in my email that I am a constituent only to give some validity to my response.
I'm actually surprised I got a response at all. What a dickless wonder this guy is (Williams). Won't even respond to the issues.

Like I state above "eloquence over ignorance". Talk nice, tell the truth, don't call them names (except where appropriate, ie. liar, ignorant) and be specific. That will make them think. Make them take notice. If you swear and shout and piss them off they'll say, "Oh, just another pothead".
IMHO anyway.

Well it isn't that good but I have to go study!!!
Here it is:
As a constituent of the Canadian Alliance Pary here in Calgary NW riding, I would like to inform you that my family and I are deeply dissapointed in your views apon the war on drugs and substance abuse in Canada. Like you, I think drug abuse is a problem in our society but I have seen that the war on drugs is a futile attempt at solving a much more complex social problem that does indeed exist. I do not advocate drug use by any means, but I do however believe there are more effective alternatives to dealing with substance abuse than criminilization.
Obviously you are ill informed on your facts and figures on drug use in Canada. Mabye you should educate yourself before blurting out rediculus comments as in your reply to John Gordon of the British Columbia Marijuana party. Be carefull what you say to those marijuana party guys; they get alot of attention from the press and I don't think they like the Canadian Alliance very much!
In Canada, there is no doubt that alcohol and nicotine are by far the most damaging drugs socially. I have seen many lives ruined from the damaging nature of alcohol, yet we encourage alcohol use through advertising and legal, social gatherings such as bars. I know many who use marijuana daily and live healthy, successfull lives as proffesionals, yet I know very few who are failures as a result of only using marijuana. Marijuana has been used as safe and effective medicine for thousands of years and many cultures prefer the use of marijuana for medicine and recreation over other pharmacuticals and legal recreational drugs such as alcohol and nicotine. Over sixteen million Canadians use tylonol as a legal source of pain relief and many Canadian's have died from an overdose of tylonol but there is not one single reported death in Canada, as a result of marijuana use or abuse, ever. So which is essentially more dangerous? I'm sure you will say marijuana, but you seem to have been effected by US propaghanda more than most Canadians your age. I'm very disapointed that you do not respect personal choices Canadians should be able to make, not to mention your lack of respect for the cultural diversity present in Canada.
In your letter to John Gordon you said, "Illegal drugs are a curse on our society. Cocaine, heroine and hallucinogenic drugs are dangerous. They destroy lives and they destroy societies. There is no place for the recreational use of these drugs in a developed society."
By criminilzing drugs we are simply exacberating the problem of drug abuse. Most ecstacy for example is far from being pure MDMA, but rather far more damaging drugs such as PCP, GHB or PMA. The legality of these drugs do not commonly influence ones choice to take them, yet by criminilizing them you have taken away the possibility of knowing what they are. Kids don't care if its legal, so why not at least give them the choice of taking what they want. I hope you realize how serious this problem is, especially since you reside in Edmonton!
So instead of treating people for drug addiction, your answer is to throw them in jail? Weak effort John. The people most supseptible to drug abuse are the socially dis-advantaged and certainly jailing them is not a long term answer to the problem. The criminilization of drugs is not only bad for the addicted person, but also for there families, there loved ones and society as a whole.
Concerning the gateway theory: Alot of kids these days will snort ritalin (legal) and drink hard liqour (legal) before they share a joint...talk to some kids sometime and you will learn alot! It seems to me, recently kids are beginning to use harder drugs such as MDMA and LSD before they even try marijuana. I don't believe in the gateway theory...its just not true!
I regret the negative tone present in this letter, however its hard to understand why people are still against marijuana in Canada. I hope you have learned something from my letter and will consider alternatives to the actions you are currently advocating in our Country.

maybe we should complain about john to others in the alliance party . A few of them even got behind the medical marijuana issue . I see he side stepped marijuana and doesnt want to hear a word about harm reduction. People are getting into hard drugs because marijuana isn't legal and has to be sought on black market .what is it about that which he does'nt get ?

one more letter sent
Mr. John Williams Canadian Alliance Caucus St. Albert Alberta
Williams.J@parl.gc.ca
Mr. John Williams:
In a letter to John Gordon you state: Illegal drugs are a curse on our society. Cocaine, heroine and hallucinogenic drugs are dangerous. They destroy lives and they destroy societies. There is no place for the recreational use of these drugs in a developed society. People think that marijuana is a mild and harmless drug, however it is a mood-altering drug. All studies show that people who eventually use hard drugs normally start by using soft drugs. Marijuana is known as the "gateway drug" to hard substance abuse. At no point in time would I want to be part of a system that condones conning our young people into thinking that mind altering drugs are beneficial. If we go to the core of any large country we can see the devastating effects of drugs on society, Vancouver being a prime example.
But yet you are and you do. I live in the core of mid size city in Ontario and witness, on a daily basis, the toll of the kind of "developed" society that you would support. I see the stigmatization of a class of society that comes with the kind of notions that your developed society brings. The toll of that exploitation has its roots in a socio-economic hierarchy that thrives on a double standard where alcohol and tobacco, unique among psychoactive drugs in that they pose a serious health, social and legal problem in our society, are taxed and in the case of alcohol, controlled, while cannabis, the most benign drug known to mankind is prohibited.
Cannabis is a safer drug than Aspirin and can be used long-term without serious side-effects. That's the conclusion Dr. Leslie Iversen of Oxford University's department of pharmacology makes in his book, The Science of Marijuana. He says on the "myths" surrounding marijuana use, such as extreme addictiveness, or links with mental illness or infertility are not supported by science. He also found cannabis is an inherently "safe drug" which does not lead to cancer, infertility, brain damage, mental illness or liver damage. Legalization of the drug for medical conditions should be considered, he says. The author, a fellow of the prestigious Royal Society, found cannabis was far less toxic than other drugs and had "an impressive record" compared with heroin, cocaine, tobacco and alcohol.
Economist Milton Friedman states "Legalizing drugs would simultaneously reduce the amount of crime and raise the quality of law enforcement. Can you conceive of any other measure that would accomplish so much to promote law and order."
thank you Wayne Phillips

I would like to thank all of you for entertaining me with your excellent letters written to politicians. I am 17 and live in the U.S. It bothers me how politicians deny the public of their votes on medical marijuana and sentencing changes for non-violent crimes. I cannot wait till I become a registered voter and I can have a say in my countries laws. I gained a lot of knowlege in reading these posts about making your point credible by conflicting their erronious facts with scientifically proven statistics. This is better than english class! thanks, Stoney PA dankfest 9-15-01 can't wait!
