Fire in my grow room

I've just had a fire in my grow room. I was moving some of my plants outside to catch a bit a natural light when a freak gust of wind blew the whole set up over on to some soft furnishings. I wasn't in the room at the time but soon smelled the smoke (a bit like burnt toast). Rushed in to find flames. Then everything happened in slow motion (massive adrenaline rush).
Anyway, the fire is out now. The whole flat stinks of smoke and I'm a bit shaken up. Don't know if I want to switch the light back on. Not sure if I even want to smoke in the flat any more.

Man, that was some gust of wind: it tore two branches off one of my apple trees.
Also, apologies for posting this in the wrong forum. I thought I was posting it in the Grow Room forum...

Always,always have a fire extinguisher with your grow.Another overlooked valuable peice of equipment.Glad to hear everythings ok though.Check bulbs and equipment thoroughly for damage before firing up again.No damage they should be ok..IMHO..PEACE..

The only damage seems to be a smoke stain on the reflector. I'll scrape that off with some fine grade sandpaper before I switch it on again. IF I switch it on again...

I hate fires (lost my garage a few years back-not pot related!),glad to hear it wasnt more serious dude.

instead of fine grade sandpaper you might want to try a fine steel wool (#000 or #0000), available at any hardware store. Grades that fine are usually used to polish furniture finishes and some metals. This could help prevent any scratching or dull spots in your reflector.
Just a thought.

Thanks Gimlet for the wire wool advice. I took another look at the bulb and that has a bit of quite oily smoke residue on it too. I've tried to clean it up with a soft cloth but it is not coming off that way. Should I try the wire wool on that, or would I be better off playing safe and getting a new bulb?

Thats your call dude, but IMHonestO (humility isn't my strongest personality trait) I would go the cheapest rout first. Steelwool only costs like 2 bucks since it comes by the bag at most home improvement centers, probably cheaper than a new bulb. I have no experience cleaning bulbs with it, but the #0000 should work. If not, it's still handy to have around the house.

hey johnny afghan,
Sorry to heat about the fire. I know what it feels like and I remember the smell. You never forget the smell. But don't let it give you buck fever. Check everything out, make sure everything is safe and start over. Thanks for posting this. It's given me a reality check and I'm gonna tighten things up and buy a fire extinguisher. Good luck, man...
