As far as your soil goes, there are lots of people in here who say the Miracle Grow potting mix is really good. Can't speak from experience though. Peace........KY

What you say can mean anything, but what you do means everything

A 400 watt will effectively cover a 3'x3' area.In your case a 2'x3'area.This will allow you to grow a couple decent plants without the addition of flours. You may want to consider getting yourself a conversion bulb for flowering them.A conversion bulb(available at hydroshops) will be more to the red colours needed for flowering. The standard MH bulb is good for veg...IMHO..PEACE..

Keep your grow within 5' x 2' of that area and you'll get 40 watts per foot, which is plenty of light. I can't recommend a soil, but do not use earthgro potting soil. The stuff sucks ass.

I've used Miracle Grow mix for seedlings, which works well. A locally made mix is what I use for the most part right now, it drains well and has good nutes. Too high of a ph though. My next effort involves 2 parts sphagum peat, one part perlite one part vermiculite, one cup dolomite lime. Ph problems are less or gone with this mix. So I'm told. I believe though, that this requires a different approach to fertilizing, fert with every watering I think. Havent read enough pertinent data yet, but I think its the most consistent approach....easier to ensure you are organic too, if thats your thing.

I read kloset_kings post about making a feeding solution, I would say that is a big part of a homemade soil-less mix as well.
