Major US Supreme Court Victory!
The U.S. Supreme Court said on October 14th it would not hear a case about whether doctors can talk to patients about medical marijuana. The decision allows existing laws that recognize the medicinal benefits of marijuana to stand in Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, even though federal law still prohibits marijuana's use. Gwen Ifill gets two perspectives on the controversial decision from Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project, and Dr. Andrea Barthwell, deputy director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. |

Newshawks: Ottawa may cut proposed pot possession limit

The federal government is considering changing its proposed marijuana decriminalization law by cutting the amount that would result in criminal charges from 15 grams to 10 grams, according to a report in The Globe and Mail. The current bill takes a tough line against illicit growers and traffickers, especially those linked to organized crime. The maximum penalty for grow operations would be boosted to 14 years from the current seven. The penalty for large-scale trafficking is already life, although 20 years has been the stiffest sentence handed out in recent years.
